Independent Music Discoveries: Issue #9

Another installment of our continuing series- more independent artist recommendations for you, but first, updates on a couple of our previously-featured musicians!

---
*UPDATES!*
Patrick Davy - Alternative Rock - Michigan, USA
Originally featured in Issue #4 of Independent Music Discoveries, I have now heard his new album Where it Began in full (you can stream much of it on his official site; the album is also now on iTunes), which I was quite impressed with! Davy's sound evokes the likes of Tom Chaplin (Keane) and Rufus Wainwright, with a golden voice and heartfelt story-telling quality. Particularly recommended are "The Joke" and title track "Where it Began".

Plastic Reverie - Rock - Massachusetts, USA
First featured in Independent Music Discoveries, Issue #5, and previous described as having"a unique, cinematic sound based around poignant songwriting and sparse classical elements", this fabulous band informed me of an upcoming gig, their only show this summer: May 27th at O'Brien's in Allston @8pm. 21+, $7, with Old Abram Brown and Drive Theory. Look out for some tracks from the group to appear at A Future in Noise after Plastic Reverie's summer recording!

---
Bird Automatic - Indie / Pop - Sydney, Australia
This Australian 5-piece's bio description of "gorgeous indie pop" is certainly right; airy vocals combined with beautiful, highly melodic instrumentation-perfect songs for the soundtrack your your summer! Their fantastic upcoming EP Not Morning People, which I'd recently gotten a chance to listen to, will be out in June. Have a listen to "About the Money", and check out Bird Automatic's Wordpress blog as well.

Rachel Furner - Acoustic / Pop - Northhampton, UK
Rachel Furner is a British singer/songwriter who, at 16, has brilliant, lovely vocal skills and surely a bright future in music ahead of her. She is currently preparing tracks for her debut album. Listen to her fab La Roux cover, "In For the Kill"- thanks to Ed for the tip!

Tiny Tide - Indie / Pop / Rock - Cesena, Italy
I heard Tiny Tide (the name, a play off of the term 'new wave') because it is the band of Mark Zonda, the fellow who runs SleepWalKing Mag (which I have recently contributed to with the article 'What Will Replace MTV?'). With their official site and MySpace Music page surrounded with arcade imagery, Tiny Tide's music is as difficult to describe as it is enjoyable to listen to- check out "ValenTine Disco Night" from the February Sessions.

Ice Palace - Indie / Pop / Rock - Minnesota, USA
Wonder Subtly Crushing Us, mixed by Craig Minowa of Cloud Cult, is the recently released debut album from Ice Palace, who embrace classic 'indie rock' aesthetics infused with the proper doses of catchiness and occasional edgy gloom. Download promo track "Thoughts/Facts".

Prabir and the Substitutes - Rock / Pop / Psychedelic - Virginia, USA
Following up last year's album Five Little Pieces, Prabir and the Substitutes' new release is the Hello EP. These guys know how to turn out summery, fun tunes reminiscent of psych-pop and even Paisley Underground acts of days gone by. Listen to promo track "Who's Going to Love You?".

I am listening to the Dark Mist EP at the moment, and it makes me think I recommended the wrong friend's music...

You should hear Cranky...

I think you will like...Mister Vague is great too, of course.

That "Prabir and the Subs" sounded interesting (I'm a sucker for the words "psychedelic" and "symphonic"!) so I gave it a listen and really enjoyed it. Thanks for steering me in their direction!
I haven't seen any posts on The Olivia Tremor Control on your site, which is who these guys remind me a bit of. If you haven't heard them (which I doubt, you muso you!), pick up "Dusk At Cubist Castle", it's really really great.

Dusk is a masterpiece!

Good stuff as usual, icastico! @Uncle E / 20nd: I actually have not heard much of the Olivia Tremor Control, I've had that on my list of stuff to check out for awhile, I will definitely do so!
